Description: Faculty of 1000
is a new type of literature awareness tool. This research service highlights
and reviews interesting new papers published in the biological sciences, based
on the recommendations of a faculty of well over 1000 selected researchers.
Strengths: This is a very innovative service by attempting to counter the conception that just because something is published in Nature or Science it is necessarily better than an article that pops up in a lesser publication.Ý The theory is that if the science is outstanding, it will be noticed regardless where it is published.Ý The site is conveniently organized by discipline, and you can have the top rated papers in your field of interest emailed to you automatically.
Weaknesses: One has to essentially trust the judgment of the reviewer ñ as far as I can tell only one or two people evaluate each paper.Ý Second, many of the publications that appear in ìhidden jewelsî are not that hidden ñ Nature Structural Molecular Biology and the Journal of Molecular Biology, for example.Ý I wonder exactly how many papers are evaluated from really obscure journals, although this is pretty trivial.
Comprehensiveness: there are enough reviews to keep you occupied for a long time.
Timeliness:
articles are updated regularly
Ease of Use: intuitive
Responsiveness: I noticed some delay in loading pages, although I suspect that has more to do with network traffic than this website specifically.
Similar or Related Sites: I do not know of any similar websites
Overall Evaluation: five stars
